I have been asked this question before and I got asked this question again today, but today the caveat was that the concerned person wanted me to reply back in as brief a manner as possible. He specifically wanted no long drawn out argument based on “motivation” and “passion” and “what you want in life” and asked me to “Look in his eyes and tell him straight up” why I was so possessed by entrepreneurship. So I shared with him - what I think is - my biggest reason in support of an entrepreneurial frame of mind.

“It takes you out of the never ending loop of having to prove your worth to others, when the only person you should be proving your worth to is you yourself”

Quite some time back I remember working for a Motorola owned company, a significant presence in my environment, and one day looking at the gentleman I referred to as my “boss,” who incidentally was always intent on making sure we called him the “boss”, and wondering … why did he decide that I was worth a 5% raise - why not 6% or to that effect 4%. The rebel as I was … I remember asking myself … how come my life had come down to someone telling me what I was worth. A few questions immediately jumped to mind, ”Who the hell is he, anyway?”,  ”Who is anyone, for that matter, to tell me what I am worth?”. Immeditately a life devoid of a significant measure of entrepreneurialism seemed like a ridiculous concept to me. What I have gained since, even in my defined regular jobs, with my emphasis on an entrepreneurial frame of mind is an ability to determine my worth purely on my own terms within the context of what I want to achieve. Each day I determine it by producing something new, by learning from something or someone new, and by creating more value in my own life and work and hopefully in someone else’s life and work too.

And that I told my friend today is the reason “Why we should be entrepreneurial”.
