In my role at OCRI as the Manager for Entrepreneurship Development, I regularly find myself advising young Ottawa entrepreneurs on the merits of bootstrapping. Ottawa has a rich portfolio of bootstrap support available in the form of numerous business plan competitions - including TVC - hosted locally and regionally. Besides the obvious financial rewards - the total reward money from the combined EIEF, Wes Nicol, TVC, Summer Company, TiE Quest et al. can add up to a healthy 50K - the access to mentorship support and advisory services that come with participation in these competitons is what makes the competitions so unique and so worth any young entrepreneurs investment of time and effort.
I have closely worked with teams running a number of these initiatives (TVC, Wes Nicol, Summer Company to name a few), and I am often surprised by how few of our young aspiring entrepreneurs understand the bootstrap support available through these world class competitions. As you consider applying to TVC, please take some time to understand and plan how you will leverage the rich support that will be be made available to you.
